I happened upon this news story and wondered if my boys would agree:
"The usual debate - Who's No. 1? - is off the table
Hakeem Olajuwon did many wonderful things for the Rockets, most obviously
hanging a pair of championship banners.
He is the NBA's blocked-shot champion, a gifted athlete, incredible competitor
and the standard for all Rockets stars that have followed.
He did, however, take from us all debate about who would be called the best
player in franchise history.
Frame the debate in any way you wish. Best career. Best with Rockets. Best
body of work. Best when at one's best. It doesn't matter. The answers are indisputable.
They are, in order, Hakeem Olajuwon, Hakeem Olajuwon, Hakeem Olajuwon and
Hakeem Olajuwon..."
I lived in Houston during the Olajuwon years. I just don't know about this. He was good, but I don't recall his being all that. Oh, well. I may not be the best judge. We only watched the Rockets if they made it through the first round of playoffs. But, hey, it happened a couple of times. And when they won, we drove up and down 1960 honking and waving just like everybody else! Oooh, and we bought t-shirts!
The Rockets are having a decent year this year, too. Maybe they'll make it past the first playoff round. As long as the Kings keep sucking, I guess I'm left with the Rockets. That's okay. Bonding time with Evan and Brett.
